European Day of Foundations and Donors
The annual European Day of Foundations and Donors raises awareness about the role and value of the European philanthropic sector.
Every year on 1 October, the European Day of Foundations and Donors shines a light on the vital role of philanthropy across Europe and the difference it makes in people’s lives. From public-benefit foundations, charities and trusts to communities, infrastructure organisations, donors, philanthropists and volunteers, we each play a part in building a fairer, more sustainable future where everyone can thrive.
2026 Theme: Philanthropy for people and planet
People and planet sit at the heart of every area of philanthropic work, whatever the place, community or cause. As Europe and the wider world face mounting pressures, from geopolitical instability and climate change to environmental degradation, philanthropy has both the responsibility and the means to help drive fair, inclusive and just transitions.
This 1 October, let’s use the European Day of Foundations and Donors to spark collective imagination and show what a better future can look like: one that works for people and planet. Let’s highlight how philanthropy can strengthen adaptability, resilience, sustainability and shared prosperity, while staying bold in the face of setbacks.
Five ways to get involved:
- Join the conversation: Share your reflections, examples and activities on social media using #October1Europe, and logos/visuals from our toolkit and help amplify posts from across the sector. Let us know if you need the logo in your country’s language – we’re happy to provide you with it.
- Dig into our resources: Draw on Philea’s climate and environment resources, including materials that can help inform discussions, events and communications.
- Share your story: Send us a short case study, example or initiative from your organisation showing philanthropy in action for people and planet.
- Host an event: Organise an online or in-person discussion, gathering or activity on or around 1 October, and let us know in advance so we can help promote it.
- Make a commitment: If you haven’t already done so, encourage your organisation to sign up to a Philanthropy for Climate commitment.
Whatever form your contribution takes, tell us about it so we can help showcase the collective energy of the sector on 1 October.
