Journalism Funders Forum – Beyond the Headlines: Why Funders Should Support Independent Media

The Journalism Funders Forum will host “Beyond the Headlines: Why Funders Should Support Independent Media” online on 23 September, with Civitates, to explore their new report; “Beyond the Headlines: Building Resilient Journalism in Europe through Collective Philanthropic Action”.

Independent public-interest media is often democracy’s canary in the coalmine, an early warning sign of deeper democratic erosion, but also one of democracy’s last lines of defence. By exposing injustice, holding power to account, and providing vital public information, it plays a crucial role in democratic resilience. Yet across Europe, independent media is under immense pressure. Economic models are collapsing, political and legal threats are intensifying, and the rapid rise of AI poses new and unknown risks. Despite its essential role, independent media remains severely underfunded.

Since 2021, Civitates’ media portfolio has supported 24 independent public-interest media organisations across 14 countries, with a total of €5.8 million in funding from 27 foundations pooling their resources and expertise. Drawing on this collective experience, the report highlights key lessons from five years of supporting media ecosystems on the frontlines of democracy.

It also makes a powerful case for why philanthropic funders are uniquely positioned to step into the breach. From strengthening business models to enabling high-quality journalism that reaches broader audiences, and protecting journalists under threat, long-term philanthropic support can be a game-changer.

This funders-only lunch will discuss the current state of public-interest media in Europe, lessons from pooled funding initiatives like Civitates, practical examples from funders supporting media and how philanthropy can further engage.

This webinar is only open to independent foundations, not to intermediaries or grantees.
