Grantmaking Taxonomies for Philanthropy

Philea, Candid and the King Baudouin Foundation will host “Grantmaking Taxonomies for Philanthropy” online on 24 June for a discussion on grantmaking taxonomies and practical steps towards greater consistency in classification systems.
For foundations, having a consolidated taxonomy of grantmaking topics could improve efficiency in the grantmaking process and enable them to better serve the philanthropic community. For grant recipients, an effective classification system that effectively categorises funding opportunities can help ensure that an organisation’s work in specific thematic areas does not go unnoticed.
At present, there is no single standardised grant classification system across philanthropy, creating the risk of missed funding opportunities. During this session, actors from across the sector will come together to discuss grant taxonomies, the value of standardising categories to create a common language in philanthropy, and the different approaches used by their respective organisations.
The discussion will also explore how more aligned taxonomies can support philanthropy infrastructure organisations and researchers by improving data comparability, strengthening evidence-building and enabling a more accurate understanding of the sector across Europe.
The session will bring together perspectives from foundations and philanthropy infrastructure organisations on how taxonomies can be revised, aligned with existing frameworks, and adapted for broader use across Europe.
This event is part of Empowering Philanthropy Infrastructure for Change (EPIC), a project co-funded by the European Union.
