Data Commons for Philanthropy
Philea will host a webinar, “Data Commons for Philanthropy” on 28 October, to explore the ongoing data harmonisation work being undertaken by Philea, the University of Geneva Centre for Philanthropy and philanthropy infrastructure organisations (PIOs) across Europe.
Data on European philanthropy is currently scattered across different systems, formats and languages, making it difficult to build an accurate, comparable picture of the sector as a whole. Data harmonisation involves aligning how foundation data is collected, structured and categorised across countries, so that national systems can be compared reliably and used to build a shared evidence base for the sector.
Previously presented at the Winter Meeting for Philanthropy Infrastructure Members in Copenhagen in 2025, Philea and University of Geneva Centre for Philanthropy have been working on an innovative AI-enabled platform combining web scraping and advanced analytics. Carried out in partnership with the Spanish Association of Foundations, the platform has the potential to improve the collection, analysis and accessibility of foundation data. This session will explore the progress made, the opportunities and challenges encountered, and potential next steps to further develop this initiative.
