Building a common framework for assessing, understanding and maximizing impact – Insights from the first Virtual Summit on Impact

The first edition of the Virtual Summit on Impact, organised by Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme and the EFC brought together 32 speakers, and 410 attendees from 57 countries for 11 hours of discussion and debate between 16-19 November.
With the rapidly growing gap between public needs and available resources, the philanthropic sector is constantly seeking to improve the methods used to predict and measure the real-world impact of the programmes they fund. The Virtual Summit on Impact sought to bring members of the sector together to collectively build a common framework for assessing, understanding and maximizing impact.
A number of key questions framed the discussions of the Summit. What is the best way to measure the impact of a programme or project? How and when is impact best measured? What are the best practices? What is the impact of different measurement strategies themselves? What measurement tools are available? Can new applications of technology improve impact measurement?
The first two days of the Summit saw the launch event of the European Funders for Impact, a joint initiative between the EFC and Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme to form a network of European funders committed to maximising the impact of their work.
