Applications open for the Philanthropic Leadership Platform: China-Europe 2026

Applications are now open for the Philanthropic Leadership Platform: China-Europe 2026, organised in partnership with the China Foundation Forum, Shanghai United Foundation and with the support of Stiftung Mercator.

The Philanthropic Leadership Platform: China-Europe is an intensive peer-led learning and exchange programme for philanthropy professionals from China and Europe. Taking place in Shanghai on 13-20 September, the programme brings together philanthropy practitioners from operating and grantmaking foundations across roles and experience levels for an in-person exchange, supported by online preparation and a long-term alumni network.

Philanthropy is facing rising expectations in a more uncertain and complex world, shaped by political volatility, social pressure, environmental crisis, and tighter financial conditions. The Philanthropic Leadership Platform: China-Europe offers a rare space to step back, learn with peers, and strengthen long-term resilience across regions. Through collaboration and knowledge exchange, participants gain deeper insights and practical strategies to enhance their philanthropic practice.

2026 focus: Resilience and commitment

This year’s programme centres on two capacities that matter immensely in the current moment:

  1. Resilience: adapting to change without losing direction
  2. Commitment:  staying with systems change until it delivers real results

These capacities are explored through four interconnected domains that shape how philanthropic organisations operate:

  1. Systems thinking: understanding how change happens and addressing root causes.
  2. Futures and foresight: anticipating uncertainty and preparing for multiple futures.
  3. People and planet: centring trust, community well-being, and ecological responsibility.
  4. Capital and investment: aligning capital, endowments, and investment strategy with mission.

New in 2026, participants will also be welcomed into the Mercator Fellowship community, gaining access to MercatorGlobe, Stiftung Mercator’s network platform that brings together project partners, alumni and staff committed to shaping society.
