Apply here!

For the 5th edition of the Philanthropic Leadership Platform: China-Europe, 20 philanthropy professionals from China and Europe will gather first online from 1 September to 27 October 2020 and then in person from 20 to 23 April 2021 in Brussels to share their knowledge, experience, creativity and concerns during this intensive, peer-learning leadership development programme. For an overview of this year’s edition, download the PLP China-Europe 2020 brochure.

Philanthropic organisations across the globe are grappling with the same fundamental questions around impact, effecting change, and understanding their role in taking on societal challenges. The aim of PLP is for participants to enhance their leadership skills by learning from each other, and then return to their home organisations and contexts with new perspectives, tools and insights that will make them better leaders. In these unprecedented times – marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, global economic turmoil, and deepening social divisions – philanthropic leadership is more important than ever.

The programme typically revolves around the themes of social innovation, leadership development and bilateral cooperation between China and Europe. The exchange will bring back the highest-rated modules from previous editions, and the curriculum will be enriched with brand-new content to be featured for the first time. The current edition will specifically focus on the following core leadership skills and techniques for addressing and navigating the unique challenges and opportunities facing philanthropy: change management, crisis management, impact management, agility, glocal thinking, shared leadership, driving social innovation, and leading partnerships.

As the platform moves from project to real platform with a growing alumni community, the 5th edition has placed the expertise and interests of alumni at the heart of the design process. The online and onsite exchanges include several sessions proposed by alumni, who will play an active role in helping participants to put leadership concepts into practice by drawing on their own experience with the programme.

The speakers for 5th edition , including a number of PLP alunni, include:

Using a peer-led format the 5th edition will continue to reflect the motto of “little teaching, lots of learning” with participants being encouraged to make the most of peers and a wider community to co-create a true knowledge and support system.

The online exchange will include 4 live sessions to be run every 2 weeks over a period of 2 months, requiring two hours of commitment, as well as recommended reading, pair and team work, and forum discussion to support participants’ learning journeys.

The onsite exchange will last 3 days and take collaboration to the next level after several months of remote working. Participants will engage in group and plenary interaction, practical workshops and masterclasses, active exchange with high-level experts and leaders of philanthropic organisations, site visits to local non-profit organisations and networking events with PLP alumni.

To boost the sharing experience, each participant will be paired up throughout the programme with one of their intercontinental peers.

Past editions of the PLP programme have been 100% face-to-face. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, the organisers took the decision to hold the first part of this year’s programme online. Participants can be assured that the in-person segment in April 2021 will be held only if health and safety conditions permit.

The platform is organised in partnership with the China Global Philanthropy Institute (CGPI) and funded by Stiftung Mercator.
