Year in Review 2024

As 2024 nears the halfway point of our Strategic Framework, and with a rapidly changing geo-political background, we find ourselves neither optimistic nor pessimistic, merely determined.

Overview

The world rotates around its axis at around 1,600 kilometres per second. There have been moments, in the past 12 months, when you could be forgiven for thinking it was spinning much faster than that. And not just spinning, but spinning out of control.

Our role at Philea is, therefore, more relevant and important than ever. Two and a half years since we launched them, we hold our vision and strategy firmly in our hands and use them as our compass to remain oriented when all around us is spinning.

In our 2024 Year in Review, set out for the first time on our new more visual and interactive platform, we tell the story of where this compass led us and the various paths we walked with our membership across a 12-month journey.

Key takeaways

  • 756 delegates from 42 countries convened in Ghent for the Philea Forum 2024 to dive into the theme of “Trust and Philanthropy”.
  • The Forum’s keynote speaker, Rutger Bregman, urged philanthropic organisations to prioritise action over awareness-raising by embracing the mindset of “moral ambition”, which he defines as “the ambition of an entrepreneur combined with the passion of an activist”
  • Our 15 Thematic Networks in 2024 organised seven large-scale events across Europe, two of which brought together more than 100 participants each.
  • We learned that “Engaging in networks” is the highest ranked benefit of being a Philea member, according to the 2024 Philea membership survey.
  • The latest edition of our PLP China-Europe exchange programme offered an important opportunity for peer learning through cross-cultural exchange between European and Chinese philanthropic leaders.
  • We ventured into new terrain by experimenting with innovative knowledge product formats, including “how-to” guides which focused on children and youth participation in philanthropy and provided practical insights to real-world challenges.
  • Coinciding with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and GivingTuesday, over 100 participants convened in Brussels for EuroPhilantopics 2024, “New EU Mandate, New Partnerships with Philanthropy”.
  • This was another year of encouraging membership growth, with 30 new Full Members and 6 new Associate Members – from 21 different countries, 4 of which from central and eastern Europe – joining in 2024.
