98% of responding foundations report progress as Philanthropy For Climate movement expands across 30 countries

4 June 2026, Brussels, Belgium – WINGS and Philea today launched the “Philanthropy For Climate: State of the Movement Report 2026”, offering the first global snapshot of how signatory foundations worldwide are responding to climate change through coordinated philanthropic action.

The findings suggest that climate action is increasingly becoming part of mainstream philanthropic practice across the movement, including among foundations whose primary focus is not climate or the environment. With 962 foundations now signed up across 30 countries, the movement represents a combined annual expenditure of over $5 billion and stewards endowments worth more than $31.8 billion.

Among 452 responding signatories:
– 98% report making progress on their climate commitments
– 88% say joining the movement strengthened their awareness and action

Benjamin Bellegy, Executive Director of WINGS, said:

“What this report shows is that climate action is no longer limited to specialist environmental funders. Foundations working on health, education, inequality, and community development are increasingly recognising that climate change is already affecting the outcomes they care about. What’s also striking is the role collective infrastructure can play; foundations that participate more actively in the movement consistently report stronger awareness, action, and progress.”

Delphine Moralis, CEO of Philea, added:

“What is most encouraging is that this isn’t just about talk; it’s about institutional change. Whether it is greening their internal operations or using their advocacy voice, foundations are increasingly recognising the risk that climate change poses and are moving beyond “just getting started”. Nearly 30% of signatories are now demonstrating leadership-level action. And yet, there is still substantial progress to be made. Our goal now is to provide the tools and peer-learning needed to make this level of integration the standard across the entire sector.”

While the report highlights success, it also identifies challenges. Shifting investment practices remains the most complex task for many foundations. However, among foundations that have confirmed they hold endowments, 95% are now actively working to align their money with their climate values. The Philanthropy For Climate: State of the Movement Report 2026 is intended both as a benchmark for the sector and as a practical resource for foundations seeking pathways into climate action.
