The EFC’s innovative Philanthropic Leadership Platform – China-Europe opens for the 4th year!
Applications are now open for the 4th edition of the Philanthropic Leadership Platform – China-Europe, apply before 29 April to take part in this years programme.
Following the success of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 editions of the Philanthropic Leadership Platform – China-Europe (墨卡托中欧公益领导力伙伴项目), the EFC and the China Global Philanthropy Institute (CGPI), with continued financial support from Stiftung Mercator, have agreed to extend the programme for a further three years.
For the 4th edition of the exchange, 20 mid-to-senior-level philanthropic leaders from China and Europe will gather from 15-22 September 2019 in Beijing to share their knowledge, experience, creativity and concerns during this intensive, peer-learning leadership development programme. The programme alternates each year between the two continents and with a new group of participants each year.
All costs, except for travel, are covered by the organisers.
Philanthropic organisations across the globe are grappling with the same fundamental questions around impact, effecting change, and understanding their role in taking on societal challenges. The aim is for participants to enhance their leadership skills by learning from each other and to go back to their home organisations and contexts with new perspectives, tools and insights that will make them better leaders.

“We’ve seen some really vibrant and useful exchanges among participants in the first three years of PLP China-Europe,” says Gerry Salole, EFC Chief Executive. “I’m delighted that all the partners felt that this programme – which brings such a diversity of approaches to social innovation – was well worth continuing for another three years.”
The CGPI’s Professor Zhenyao Wang sees the programme as “…a milestone of China-Europe collaboration in philanthropy. The Philanthropic Leadership Platform is a mechanism that opens up a new era of partnership between the two economies (这是中欧公益领域合作的一个里程碑事件，墨卡托中欧公益伙伴的机制性合作，将开辟中欧公益合作的新时代).”
This year’s programme will revolve around the themes of social innovation, leadership development and bilateral cooperation between China and Europe, but will also be aligned with participants’ own interests and expertise.
The programme will last a total of 8 days: 2 days for travel and 6 days for the programme activities. Participants engage in group and plenary interaction, and active exchange with high-level experts and leaders of institutions in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The programme is built on the following specific activities:
- Group work on specific topics
- Plenary discussions
- Lectures and trainings
- Intergroup workshops
- Excursions to other foundations and non-profit organisations
- Site visits to local philanthropy projects
To boost the sharing experience, each participant will be paired up throughout the programme with one of their intercontinental peers.
