Portuguese Foundation Centre launches Commitment for Climate Action
The Portuguese Foundation Centre has launched the Portuguese Foundations Commitment for Climate Action, a framework for foundations to integrate climate across their work, on 24 October, joining the growing, global Philanthropy For Climate movement.
Acknowledging the growing impact of climate change on people and planet, foundations in Portugal recognise the need for urgent and collective action. The commitment has launched with 41 foundation signatories from across Portugal who commit to integrating climate across their work through the following pillars:
- By recognising the climate emergency and interconnected challenges
- Through training, capacity building and knowledge sharing
- By adopting structural and sustainable measures
- Through sustainable investments
- Through the allocation of their resources
- By acting collectively and amplifying their impact
- Through transparency, monitoring and accountability
This effort builds on recent work within the Portuguese philanthropy ecosystem to align their work with the SDGs and the Portuguese Commitment represents the 10th locally-led Philanthropy For Climate commitment. The commitments are initiatives through which national and/or regional philanthropy infrastructure organisations and foundations work together to mobilise philanthropic organisations of all sizes, types and mission areas to integrate climate from governance to grantmaking. There are now over 950 signatories across the various Philanthropy For Climate commitments.
The scale and urgency climate crisis demand a whole-sector, systemic and collaborative approach that transcends individual efforts and geographic borders. This requires strategies which are aligned and coordinated locally, nationally, regionally, and globally.
In countries lacking a national or regional commitment, the International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change, coordinated by Philea and WINGS, provides a global entry point for foundations looking to take action.
