Philea statement of solidarity with Georgian civil society and people
Philea is deeply concerned about developments in Georgia and wants to express its solidarity with Georgian civil society and philanthropy.
At Philea, our vision is for philanthropy to use its full potential to co-shape and support a pluralistic, just and resilient society that centres people and planet. The recent developments in Georgia, the restrictions put in place on civil society and philanthropy and the use of violence against protests run clearly counter to the vision and values we stand for. We remain in solidarity with Georgia’s civil society and citizens when demonstrating their dedication to European democratic values and principles, and will continue to collaborate with the country’s civil society and philanthropy organisations.
Philea had already expressed concerns about the law on “Transparency of Foreign Influence” in May this year and again at our annual conference in Ghent, attended by more than 700 European philanthropists.
We call on the Georgian government to end violence against media and protesters; and to continue to implement reforms that are in line with European core values and freedoms. Philea stands in solidarity with the Georgian people and their democratic and European aspirations.
