Thomson Reuters Foundation
We are the corporate foundation of Thomson Reuters. First established as the Reuters Foundation in 1982, today we are a global professional services organisation working in international development and registered as an independent charity in the UK, Europeand USA. We believe that societies around the world should be free, fair and informed, as underpinned by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We use the combined power of journalism and the law, together with data intelligence, to build global awareness of critical issues faced by humanity, inspire collective leadership and help shape a prosperous world where no one is left behind.
Mission
Free and independent media is critical to informing citizens and to holding power to account but is increasingly under threat. The law upholds human rights and freedoms, but is often abused or inaccessible, undermining its purpose. Corporations can actively contribute to social progress, but only when they are able to balance the short-term needs of their shareholders with the long-term impact on their stakeholders communities.Through our media, legal and data-driven expertise we offer a range of initiatives and services that bolster the resilience of independent media, strengthen access to the law and foster responsible business practices, fundamental pillars that are integral to free, fair and informed societies.

A free, independent media is the cornerstone of democracy. It holds power to account and empowers civil society to make informed decisions. We provide a range of support to journalists, news outlets and civil society organisations dedicated to defending and advancing press freedom globally.
A fair legal ecosystem is critical to upholding human rights. Increasingly though, the law is being undermined or abused to seize power or is simply inaccessible for those who need it most. We work to scale the practice of pro bono across the profession, and we provide free legal support and resources to empower at-risk and marginalised communities.
Corporations can contribute to social progress when they balance the short-term needs of their shareholders with the long-term impact on their stakeholders’ communities. We leverage our networks and data intelligence to encourage responsible business practices and corporate transparency, enabling businesses to thrive whilst doing no harm.
