Tiepolo – Philanthropy Placement Programme

Tiepolo is a peer-learning placement programme created to empower foundation professionals through a hands-on, peer-learning experience in which foundation staff spend time working with a designated peer in another European foundation.

Overview

The philanthropic field is rich in diversity and constantly evolving. Yet, the opportunities for practical, on-the-ground learning remain limited. Traditional courses are often long, online-only, or designed for senior executives, leaving a gap for foundation staff at all levels who seek meaningful exchanges that deepen understanding of the field and improve philanthropic practice.

Launched in 2012, inspired by Pier Mario Vello, late Secretary General, Fondazione Cariplo, and supported by Fondazione Cariplo and Adessium, Tiepolo was created to address this gap. It offers 2-5 day placements within peer foundations across Europe, giving participants space to observe, question, collaborate, and grow.

Tiepolo is more than a learning programme, its a commitment to building a stronger, more connected philanthropy sector, one exchange at a time.

How it Works

Each placement begins with a detailed application process, where participants outline their goals and learning needs. Philea then works to carefully match applicants with a host foundation and develop a tailored agenda to provide an immersive learning experience, to explore shared challenges, generate new ideas and foster deeper connections within the sector.

Since its launch, TIEPOLO has facilitated 37 placements across 18 countries, building a vibrant network of professionals equipped with new perspectives, practical tools, and enduring relationships.

Programme Benefits

  • Face-to-face, experience-based learning: Real-time exchanges with peers offer insights that no online training or webinar can replicate.
  • Tailored placements: Each placement is designed to reflect the specific interests and goals of the participant.
  • Open to all levels: From junior staff to organisational leaders, anyone in a Philea member organisation can benefit.
  • Low-barrier access: Philea covers the organisational costs, participants only need to cover travel and accommodation.
The host was an excellent choice for what he was looking for: both in terms of the knowledge and experience they have and in their openness and willingness to share and discuss frankly any issues regarding their monitoring and evaluation work.

Tiepolo participant

Extremely positive experience, I saw two very different realities and in each case I gained important insights to bring innovations within my organisation

Tiepolo participant

The feedback we gathered from participants was excellent. Our colleagues greatly appreciated the presentations, the spirit of sharing on the various themes and the way in which they were welcomed at the Foundation. From our side it was a pleasure too
