First ever Philanthropic Leadership Platform: Russia-Europe launched at the EFC 30th anniversary in Brussels
The first edition of the new Philanthropic Leadership Platform: Russia-Europe, undertaken in partnership with the Vladimir Potanin Foundation, helped 20 participants focus on how philanthropic organisations can co-create, learn, adapt and scale lasting solutions to societal challenges.
It took place from 4-8 November, during the EFC’s 30th anniversary week and the exchange was informed by opinion pieces about how philanthropy has evolved and future trends, collected by the EFC in the framework of its 30th anniversary, as well as a working paper along similar lines produced by the Center for Philanthropy Development of the Vladimir Potanin Foundation.
Participants were engaged in group and plenary discussions and active exchanges with high-level experts and leaders of institutions in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The programme was built on the following specific activities:
- Group work on specific topics
- Plenary discussions
- Lectures and trainings
- Intergroup workshops
- Excursions to other foundations and non-profit organisations
- Site visits to local philanthropy projects

The week also saw the first ever reunion of alumni from the first four years of the Philanthropic Leadership Platform: China-Europe which was launched by the EFC in partnership with China Global Philanthropy Institute in 2016, and is funded by Stiftung Mercator.
40 participants, including PLP: Russia-Europe fellows, PLP: China-Europe alumni and other guests attended a networking lunch where the representatives of CGPI, Stiftung Mercator, EFC and Vladimir Potanin Foundation welcomed attendees to the meeting. Each of them emphasised the importance of intercultural dialogue among philanthropic actors and peer-to-peer interaction, creating opportunities for better understanding one another’s context, building bridges and creating a common understanding in dealing with challenges our societies are facing.
The networking lunch was followed by world café sessions where eight experts presented their unique approach to social innovation. Cultural sensitivity, social innovation in China, wellbeing of individuals, mobility vs environment, corporate social innovation and rights to the city, disability inclusion and social investing were among the topics that were covered. Through table discussions, participants discussed the advantages and difficulties in applying each tool/approach presented . Participants then had a chance to join the EFC 30th anniversary event in the evening to carry on the conversations they started in the afternoon.
