The European Commission 2024 Rule of Law Report and Philanthropy
Ariadne, Civitates and Philea will organise “The European Commission 2024 Rule of Law Report and Philanthropy” online on 20 November to shed light on the pivotal trends highlighted within the European Commission’s fifth annual rule of law report.
The rule of law is critical to democracy and the functioning of the European Union and its member states. Deteriorating standards in several EU member states threaten corruption, fair elections, and erode mutual trust between EU member states. Countries in which the Rule of Law is weaker tend to also close civil society and philanthropy space, in particular where those actors stand for defending and promoting European values.
In a context of increasing rule of law backsliding within the EU, the European Commission published its fifth annual rule of law report which for the first time includes country chapters on four enlargement countries. The incoming European Commission is expected to further put the rule of law at the heart of the European Union, and strengthen the link between the recommendations and funding under the EU budget.
This webinar will shed light on the trends highlighted within the report, as well as offer space for esteemed representatives from European philanthropy to share their initiatives aimed at bolstering civil society in its endeavours to protect civic space and maintain the rule of law. It will also discuss how civil society can counter the impact of violence at the EU internal borders on the rule of law, and reflect on the value of the report in the accession process.
