Standing Together for Philanthropic Freedoms

Philea will host “Standing Together for Philanthropic Freedoms”, online on 30 April, a members-only conversation to reflect on what’s at stake and how we can act together to defend and strengthen our collective voice.

Over the past decade, civil society and philanthropy have faced growing restrictions across Europe and beyond. From legal and regulatory barriers to public funding cuts and attempts to delegitimise advocacy and independent civic action, the space for philanthropy to operate – and to thrive – is under pressure.

While these developments are not new, they are escalating. The recent rollback of government aid, rising legal restrictions and efforts to delegitimise civil society – seen in parts of Europe and in traditional democracies like the United States – have serious implications for philanthropy and the communities we serve.

This one-hour conversation is an opportunity to:

  • Reaffirm the essential role of philanthropy in upholding democratic values and stand in solidarity with each other;
  • Share insights on recent developments and threats affecting the sector;
  • Explore what’s needed to foster an enabling environment for philanthropy and civic space;
