Leaders Convening on Long-Term Governance and Democracy in Europe

Philea, the Belgian Federation of Philanthropic Foundations and the School of International Futures (SOIF) will host “Leaders Convening on Long-Term Governance and Democracy in Europe” in Brussels on 25 June.

Across Europe, governments are grappling with a common challenge: how do we make decisions today that are capable of delivering wellbeing, resilience and prosperity for future generations? At the same time, a growing movement is emerging around long term governance, intergenerational fairness and the wellbeing economy. New institutions, strategies and approaches are being developed to help governments move beyond short term political cycles and respond more effectively to the complex challenges of our time.

This discussion will explore the development of the European Union’s first Intergenerational Fairness Strategy and what it could mean for future policymaking, the growing intersection between long term governance and the wellbeing economy movement, emerging innovations, reforms and lessons from countries across Europe that are embedding longer-term thinking into decision making and the role philanthropy can play in accelerating, connecting and sustaining this work.

This will be an informal, off-the-record conversation designed to encourage honest exchange, shared learning and collective exploration. This discussion offers an opportunity to connect with others who are exploring how governance systems can become more future focused, more preventative and better equipped to serve both current and future generations.
