European Environmental Funders Group – Navigating the Waters: Addressing the Root Causes of Environmental Issues

The European Environmental Funders Group will meet on 2 June to explore “Navigating the Waters: Addressing the Root Causes of Environmental Issues”, in Lisbon, just before the Philea Forum 2025.

In the last mapping released by the European Environmental Funders Group, it was found that funding to coastal and marine work fell back by more than 30%. With 71% of the Earth’s surface covered by water, and water playing a critical role in society, both for the vitality of communities, but also its potential destructive, this meeting will focus on major marine issues such as pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

The discussions will explore the root causes of these environmental issues and how philanthropy could help drive change. By addressing these fundamental questions, we will explore targeted strategies that tackle the underlying factors contributing to marine environmental degradation.

This is the first meeting of the European Environmental Funders Group after a year of intense strategic rethinking. This process has led to the definition of a pragmatic and systemic approach aimed at helping foundations operating in the environmental sector to identify and address the root causes of environmental problems.
