Deutscher Stiftungstag 2026
The Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen will host Deutscher Stiftungstag 2026 on 20-21 May in Hamburg.
Freedom is the prerequisite for all responsible action. The “freedom to begin” is a defining characteristic of foundations: they foster ideas, discover talents, dare to experiment – and are equally committed to preservation and remembrance. But with freedom comes responsibility. It’s not enough to talk cleverly and think sharply. How do we put our money where our mouth is? How do we keep open spaces for initiative and innovation? And what exactly is the role of foundations?
More than ever, freedom must be nurtured and defended today – against its creeping erosion in political discourse and in light of the complexities of our time. Foundations are not on the sidelines of this process. As an important part of civil society, they help shape open society through their philanthropic and civic engagement. They loosen rigid structures, strengthen voices against polarization, and enable social participation.
The Deutscher Stiftungstag 2026 provides a platform for reflecting on freedom – as a fundamental principle, not a mere platitude. In the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg , whose very name affirms freedom and action, representatives of foundations, members of civil society, and experts from academia, politics, and the media will convene. At a time when liberal democracy is increasingly under pressure, we want to not only discuss issues but also develop concrete initiatives for acting in freedom.
