Democracy Network – Fight or Flight? Philanthropy’s Response to Rising Right-wing Extremism

The Democracy Network will host the next Democracy Funders Coffee on “Fight or Flight? Philanthropy’s Response to Rising Right-wing Extremism” online on 4 March.
Right-wing extremism is gaining ground and at the moment the philanthropic community seems to be caught between a fight or flight response. Is philanthropy shifting from progressing democracy to merely holding the line? Are we sufficiently organising against adversity?
This discussion, led by Joe Elborn, Evens Foundation, will explore the added value to the community of engaging in deep scenario planning exercises and the mapping of possible futures around the 2029 European Parliament elections. Joining the conversation, Elaine Stabler, Alliance Magazine, will present the results of Alliance Magazine’s 2025 readers’ questionnaire, produced in partnership with Doc Society, which sought to understand how rising right-wing populism, extremism and authoritarianism are reshaping the global philanthropy landscape.
To help funders connect, share learnings and align strategies, the Democracy Network began the Democracy Funders Coffees, informal conversations to better understand how philanthropy can defend and strengthen European democracy together.
This event is open to Philea members and/or foundations supporting democracy.
