European Research and Innovation Days

The European Commission’s Research & Innovation Directorate-General is hosting the inaugural European Research and Innovation Days on the 24th to 26th September at the KANAL-Centre Pompidou, Brussels.
The European Research and Innovation Days aim to bring together world leaders from industry, finance, academia and business to debate and shape the future research and innovation landscape. It also seeks to mobilise EU citizens and increase general awareness and understanding of how important research and innovation are in addressing societal challenges.
This inaugural annual event will feature a high-level Policy Conference, an Innovative Europe Hub and the annual ‘Science is Wonderful’ exhibition and will see the EFC organising sessions relating specifically to developing cooperation between the philanthropic sector and the European Commission.
The EFC sessions will be:
Eyes on the innovation prizes – Innovative Europe Hub, Wednesday 25 September (10:00-11:00)
This session will present the six EIC Horizon Prizes, Space, Batteries, Artificial Photosynthesis, Blockchains, Earth Observation and Humanitarian Aid, explaining how they work, how they stimulate open innovation and explore what other prizes may be launched in the future.
Institutional Philanthropy Supporting Science, Research and Innovation – Archimedes, Wednesday 25 September (14:00-15:00)
This plenary session with Commissioner Moedas, will aim to increase understanding between the European Institutions and philanthropic sector. It will outline the past experiences that they have working together, and the main opportunities and challenges present with further collaborations, for both Horizon Europe, and more broadly for the European Research Area.
Innovative approach to policy co-creation with Philanthropic actors – Mendel, Wednesday 25 September (16:15-17:15)
This dedicated session will focus upon developing mechanisms for the European Commission and philanthropic actors to exchange on policy issues. Both the Commission and philanthropic sector are grappling with similar policy issues such as dealing with open data, open access, responsible research, gender equality, the R&I divide, and support for innovative ecosystems, and have developed innovative policy solutions and best practices to deal with these issues.
A formal mechanism to exchange on policy issues would allow the sectors to share common policy challenges and solutions, for a more efficient European Research Area and this session will explore how such a mechanism could be established.
Leveraging private Philanthropic cooperation to enhance European R&I – Mendel, Thursday 26 September (10:30-11:30)
This dedicated session will focus on operationalising two different partnership models; co-programming and co-funding. Both the European Commission, and individual philanthropic organisations, have different barriers to entering partnerships including geographic, legal and mission-related barriers. Although both sectors have very different roles in society, they both aim to have the greatest impact in the European Research Area. This session will dive into how both sectors could form partnerships for the benefit of the European Research Area.
