The Carnegie UK Trust releases report following the conclusion of its Twin Towns project

The Carnegie UK Trust has released a report, ”Journeys of Understanding: Domestic twinning as an approach to improving town capacity and wellbeing” with the conclusion of its Twin Towns project.

The report provides a comprehensive summary of the highlights, challenges and lessons from the 18 month project which created the first intra-UK twinning of towns. The Twin Towns project was established as a means to reinvigorate local towns through a process of learning and collaboration, and paired together 6 towns;

• Broughshane (Northern Ireland) and Wooler (Northumberland)
• North Shields (North East) and Merthyr Tydfil (Wales)
• Whitburn (Scotland) and Oswaldtwistle (Lancashire)

The selected towns faced a range of challenges, similar to those experienced by towns up and down the UK, including unemployment due to the decline or closure of major industries, empty highstreets and town centres and low energy and motivation of community.
