Diversity, Migration and Integration Thematic Network and EPIM – Closing the representation gap for people with lived migration experience in public and policy advocacy on migration issues
The EFC Diversity, Migration and Integration Thematic Network and EPIM, the European Programme for Integration and Migration, will host a joint event on 21 April exploring “Closing the representation gap for people with lived migration experience in public and policy advocacy on migration issues“.
Migrant-led organisations are largely underrepresented in the work on influencing policy-making and public discourse on migration: a credible and legitimate source to how policy and practice is reaching those they aim to reach. Compared to other contexts and sectors where participation in policy-making of people with lived experience is more advanced – the motto ‘Nothing About Us Without us’ has been widely used since the 90s by the disability rights movement –, the representation and participation of people with a lived experience in the migration sector still face significant barriers, despite an increased momentum on the subject.
Through this joint DMI-EPIM session, private funders and advocates with lived experience will discuss the representation gap in migration advocacy in Europe and share learnings, experiences and concrete ideas on how funders can strengthen their support to migrant-led advocacy and campaigning.
