EFC EEFG Webinar Series Ep.1 | Environment, health and social inequalities | 3 July 2020
Exploring “Environment, health and social inequalities: relations and impacts”, with the EFC’s European Environmental Funders Group (EEFG), this webinar on 3 July is the first episode in a series of webinars discussing specific environmental issues currently at stake for the philanthropic sector.
Environmental issues like air pollution and extreme temperatures contribute to serious illnesses and premature deaths. In addition, these hazards do not affect everyone in the same way. In fact, they tend to impact vulnerable people such as the elderly, those in poor health, lower socio-economic groups the most. The uneven distribution of the impacts of environmental hazards appears to closely reflect the socio-demographic differences within our society.
What do we know about the unequal exposure of our communities? To what extent are current environmental policies and actions considering social inequalities in Europe? What parallels can be drawn with the impact of COVID-19 on our society? How has the corona crisis affected environmental hazards? Finally, what is the role of philanthropy in improving the societal resilience in order to better cope with crises and emergency situations?
The webinar explores around the topic introduced by Aleksandra Kazmierczak, lead author of the report Unequal exposure and unequal impacts: social vulnerability to air pollution, noise and extreme temperatures in Europe.
